Wilton Plaza, SW1

There's a certain satisfaction that comes from combining multiple uses harmoniously in one building. Wilton Plaza is a good example. Completed in May 2009, it combines private, affordable and student accommodation in a central location, as well as three lively retail units.

The first thing you notice as you approach is the colourful glass installation that forms part of the main façade. Designed by artist Kate Maestri, it adds a welcome dash of colour and light to the streetscape. Walk in and you'll find 157 student bedrooms (part of the University of Central London), 37 private apartments (ranging from one to three-bed) and 74 affordable dwellings (up to four-bed). Many of the apartments overlook the central courtyard gardens and play area, making for a remarkably calm living environment, despite the location just yards from Victoria Station.

As well as being good news for their occupants, these affordable homes are also a great achievement for Westminster City Council, delivering a massive 60% of their affordable housing target under the Local Area Agreement. It's a clear example of the way we work in partnership with policy-makers for the benefit of the local community.

The same principle extends to our environmental approach. At least 10% of the energy used at Wilton Plaza comes from renewable sources (including solar panels on the roof), leading to a combination of EcoHomes 'Very Good' and 'Excellent' ratings.
