Supporting talent

The Young Vic’s Vocational Training Programme, which equips local young people with key employability skills, is one of the inspirational projects that Land Securities is supporting in 2010.

Land Securities’ financial support will go directly towards a training scheme for 16-25 years olds which covers the creative and technical aspects of theatre production and stage design.  The course combines practical work experience with intensive skills training.  It is offered completely free of charge and 50 young people will benefit from it throughout the year.

Inclusivity is at the heart of the programme which is aimed particularly at people from black and ethnic minorities or those who are not in full time education or training. The aim is not only to boost the employability chances of local young people but to inspire them with the exciting and varied career paths which are open to them.

The programme has a strong track record in motivating local young people to strive and to succeed.  Rikki Henry, 22, from Brixton, is one of the many success stories coming out of the scheme. Rikki took part in vocational training for aspiring directors at the Young Vic between 2008 and 2009 and is now a successful freelance theatre director, working in London’s most exciting West End theatres.

Commenting on the Land Securities donation, Rhiannon Phillips, Head of Corporate Relations at the Young Vic, said: “The Young Vic has long been considered a leader in promoting and nurturing youth talent in South London.  Expertise and financial backing from industry is vital for us to be able to make the best possible impact on the lives of local young people and so I’m thrilled that Land Securities has come on board for another year.”

This is the second year that Land Securities has supported The Young Vic's Vocational Training Programme and this latest grant will go towards industry placements, tailored careers advice and a wealth of industry knowledge from the Young Vic’s technical team.

Land Securities London Corporate Community Investment programme has provided more than £285,000 of donations to a number of good causes during 2009.
